Posted by under Human Rights Watch on 23 December 2000

Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM),a human rights NGO, said in October that, for the 40 years the ISA has been in force, 10,000 have been detained under it.

Although it is fewer during Prime Minister Mahathir's term of office. Datuk Rais Yatim, Minister in the Prime Minister's department, said that this indicates that Dr Mahathir does not believe in detaining people arbitrarily.

Opposition Democratic Action Party Secretary-General Kerk Kim Hock responded that the issue is not the number of detainees but rather that the law goes against civil liberties and must be repealed.

Show some love,
