Tian Chua Arrested at 2:40 am, 22 Dec 2000

Chua Tian Chang @ Tian Chua, Vice-President of the National Justice Party (KeADILan) was arrested early this morning at around 2:30 am at his office in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.

7 police officers arrived in two cars (car number plates: WHB 6102, WCW 5561). All officers claimed to be from the Police Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. Tian Chua was arrested by police officer Ismail Haji Omar, based on a police report made against him in Lunas, in the state of Kedah.

Tian Chua was informed that he would be charged in the Kulim magistrates court, Kedah , tomorrow morning. Chua was handcuffed before being taken to a nearby police station, Brickfields. From there, he will be taken to Kulim.

4 arrests yesterday

On 21 December, 4 people who had lodged police reports regarding suspected 'phantom voters' at the recent Lunas by-election were arrested at early hours of the morning.

They are:

Zamil Ibrahim (Kedah KeADILan secretary; arrested at around 1 am) Ahmad Khairudin Jamaludin (from Lunas; arrested at around 2 am) Mohd Khairi Yahya (arrested at 4:30 am at Kota Kuala Muda) Mohd Fauzi Awang Kechik (arrested at 4:30 am at Kota Kuala Muda)

The four were charged under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting, which carries a maximum jail term of two years or a fine, or both, on conviction.

The charge tendered by Deputy Public Prosecutor Zulkifli Bakar stated that the four had on Nov 29 between 6.30am and 9am at Taman Mewah, Kulim, Kedah, participated in an illegal assembly and had stopped several buses with passengers who were on their way to the Barisan Nasional office at Taman Sri Seladang, Lunas, Kulim.

All four are presently out on bail, which was fixed at RM 5,000. Their court case will be heard on April 14th, 2001.
