At 1530 GMT (Singapore Time 2330hrs), American led coalition forces attacked bases of the Taliban and Al Qaeda network, which Osama bin Laden heads. Air strikes were made on three key areas: Kabul, Kandahar and Jalalabad. Members of the coalition supported the air strikes but Americans and Britons were urged to be extra vigilant as there might be retaliatory attacks by the terrorists.
There have been protests at the American Embassy in Jakarta against the attacks. The US is keeping an alert watch of any such protests or threat to Americans in the Southeast Asian region.
The attack was in part to destroy the communications and radar installations of the Taliban.
Reports have come in to show that there have been fighting between Taliban and the Northern Alliance and also other rebel forces at the borders.
It is expected that a secret ground offensive by coalition special forces could be underway soon.
The Taliban has issued a statement saying that the air strikes were terrorist acts and that they would defend themselves by all means.
