Plenary speakers Sinapan Samydorai, who is the President of Think Centre, Dr.Tan Chong Kee,Chairman of the BOD The Necessary Stage, James Gomez, Deputy Secretary-General of Workers' Party, and J.B. Jeyaretnam, former Secretary-General of Workers' Party.
The conference will highlight the latest trends, emerging issues, best practices and key decisions shaping the future of Human Rights Defenders. The theme this year is "Human Rights Defenders: Past, Present and Future"
Human rights education should become part of compulsory school education to anchor all children with core human values to contribute positively in a globalized world.
The theme is particularly appropriate now, as 2003 marks the 55th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights [UDHR]. Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. The Declaration establishes the inalienable economic, social, civil and political rights of every human being. UDHR's Article 19 states that "everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association;" Article 23 'right to work, to be free to choose your work, to get a salary which allows you to support your family" and Article 24 "Each work day should not be too long, since everyone has the right to rest and should be able to take regular paid holidays."
Think Centre takes the day to honor a person who has made significant contributions to the promotion and protection of human rights in Singapore. This year we honor J.B. Jeyaretnam, the fearless and tireless human rights advocate, and friend of Think Centre. The Human rights Defenders Award will be conferred on J.B. Jeyaretnam.
It is with great pleasure that Think Centre invites you to join in this celebration, to share your solidarity, and to express your support to all human rights and the human rights defenders.
