When a court sentences a person to death, the result is irreversible.
Nguyen Tuong Van will be hanged today, Friday, 2nd Decemeber 2005, at 6.00 am.
The government of Singapore can still save the life of Nguyen Tuong Van and all others on the death-row.
This cruel, inhumane and degrading punishment has to stop.
Think Centre together with fellow concern Singaporeans and the international community pleas to stop this cruel punishment.
Think Centre express its concern that the death penalty is being used inconsistently with the criteria of absolute necessity and proportionality in relation to drug trafficking cases.
We believe that any humane criminal justice system could not continue to justify the retention of the death penalty based on retribution.
Think Centre calls on the government to remove the mandatory death penalty for simple drug possession.
Overcoming social problems and bring criminal masterminds to justice is much more effective then hanging those presumed to be traffickers for simple possession of drugs.
Think Centre endorse the call for the moratorium on the death penalty in Singapore.
The moratorium will give Singapore an the opportunity to re-examine both the purpose of the penalty and its perceived effectiveness, and can save the lives of the condemned.
