The following is a press release issued today (3rd May 2001) by J B Jeyaretnam. It is in response to the earlier revelation that he's stepping down as the Secretary-General of the Workers' Party.
I wish to allay any fears in the minds of my many thousands of supporters that I am intending to retire from political activity.
I assure them that that is far from the case. God willing, I shall be participating in the next elections.
I set myself a task when I entered politics–to reduce the PAP majority in Parliament to less than two-thirds. That task is not finished and so long as I have the health and strength, I intend to persevere in that task.
This release will, I hope, also quash any hopes in the PAP camp that they have seen the end of me.
