SEVERAL new faces are ranked high as Asia's most powerful communicators in Asiaweek's Power 50 ranking for this year.

Keiji Tachikawa, president of Japanese telco, NTT DoCoMo and Oscar-winning Taiwanese director Ang Lee occupy second and third spot.

But last year's No 1 ranking Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka Shing has moved down to 13th position, and has been replaced by Falungong leader, Li Hongzhi for "his ability to mobilise millions". He occupied 38th place last year.

Among the notables dropped from the list is Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong, who stood at 11th position last year. The others are Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji, South Korean President Kim Dae Jung and Richard Li, executive chairman of Pacific Century Group.

Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew has been placed 30th, down seven spots from 23rd position last year.

Singapore Airlines chief executive officer Cheong Choong Kong has been newly included on the list at 38th spot. James Gomez, the Think Centre's former executive director is also there, placed 44th.

The annual ranking undertaken by editors of Asiaweek, and published in the June 1 issue, has left out 35 names from last year's Power 50 elite, as many of them are, in Asiaweek's words, "old-style politicians and tycoons".
