Haji E.S. Ebrahim Marican sent an email on 29 Oct 2000 alleging quite a few things about PAP Minister Abdullah Tarmugi. It resulted in a threat of lawsuit and the consequent apology by Mr. Marican. Be careful, you, the reader, could be sued for an erroneous email too. Read below to find out more....

APOLOGY

1. On 29 October 2000, I sent an email to various persons and organizations in which I made certain statements which were understood to mean:

(a) that Mr Abdullah Tarmugi, the Minister of Community Development and Sports and the Minister-in-Charge of Muslim Affairs, instigated a conspiracy among the Muslim Members of Parliament to act against the interests of the Indian Muslim Community in Singapore by renaming the wakaf Kassim annex;

(b) that Mr Abdullah Tarmugi had used his powers as a Minister to intimidate me; and

(c) that as a result of the allegation in (a) and/or (b) above, Mr Abdullah Tarmugi has been ostracised by the Indian Muslim community in Singapore.

2. I admit and acknowledge that I had no basis to make those allegations and that they are false and untrue. I acknowledge and accept that Mr Abdullah Tarmugi has suffered damage as a result of these allegations and that he is entitled to damages.

3. I, Haji E.S. Ebrahim Marican, do hereby unreservedly withdraw these allegations and apologise to Mr Abdullah Tarmugi for the distress and embarrassment caused to him by my false and baseless allegations.

4. I hereby also undertake not to make any further allegations or statements to the same or similar effect. I also wish to state that I have agreed to indemnify Mr Abdullah Tarmugi for all the costs and expenses incurred by him in connection with this matter. Mr Abdullah Tarmugi has kindly agreed to waive his claim for damages if I make this apology and provide this undertaking.

Haji E.S. Ebrahim Marican
