Dear Sir,
Joint Statement on the Safety of Aung San Suu Kyi and her colleagues
We are gravely concerned for the safety of Nobel Peace Laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, the vice president of National League for Democracy (NLD), U Tin U and their 16 other colleagues and strongly condemn the Burmese military junta for detaining them incommunicado.
What has happened in Burma is a gross violation of fundamental human rights and is totally unacceptable in a civilised world. The world will hold the Burmese junta responsible if anything were to happen to Aung San Suu Kyi and her colleagues.
We strongly urge:
1. The ruling State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) to release Aung San Suu Kyi, U Tin U and 16 others immediately and unconditionally and allow them to move in the country freely.
2. The SPDC to stop immediately all forms of harassment and intimidation on the NLD, its leaders and members.
3. The SPDC to immediately heed the calls of the NLD and engage itself in peaceful dialogue with the NLD to find a political solution to the country, which will reflect the democratic will of the people.
4. ASEAN to send a delegation to Burma to ensure in person that Aung San Suu Kyi and her colleagues are physically unharmed and not subjected to any form of torture.
5. ASEAN to exercise the Troika mechanism accepted in the recent ministerial meeting in Bangkok to resolve the political crisis in Burma and to ensure that the fundamental human rights of the people are upheld.
6. The Malaysian national oil company, Petronas to withdraw all its investment in Burma so that a democratic way of life will be respected and observed by the Burmese military junta.
